Yesterday, I woke up to a hilarious conversation on a WhatsApp group, where a friend was moaning about the pain of getting a Brazilian wax. I’d intended to write a post on body hairs so the conversation was perfect timing.

So, from the head to the legs, let’s talk about body hair removal, shall we?

essentials for body hair removal

1. Head

For men, I think a clean-shaved head actually looks good on some guys, so if you’re getting bald at a young age, don’t worry! Please always ensure you have your own clipper or your barber uses a sterilised one. Some ladies also rock a low-cut really well though, and for me it’s whatever works for you! At some point, my mum got fed up of my tough hair and we headed for the barbers so I got a low cut! I also saw her do the same for two of my little sisters – thankfully they still looked cute.

2. Eyebrows

This applies to many women, as these days, it’s all about the fleek eyebrow.  I naturally had decent eyebrows so I never really bothered. I eventually had a friend put a razor to them when I turned 21 and right up till now I’ve probably only had it done 10 times. I wanted to get it threaded on my 26th birthday which didn’t happen. Now once in a blue moon, I get a wax. What’s your go-to method for eyebrow hair removal?

3. Lips, Chin and Neck

Not really common, but some ladies grow hair here. If it’s not so much, tweezers are really good for this region. There’s also lip waxing which I’ve never tried but I think works well. For the men, this is obviously when the beard gang folks stand tall and proud. It really has become such a thing hasn’t it? Sometimes I think I like the bead gang, other times I’m certain I prefer a clean shaved man. What team are you on?

4. Underarms

One of the first articles I wrote as a member of the Press club in Uni was about hairy underarms! Simply put, underarms should be clean. If in doubt, no sleeveless clothes. Shaving sticks and hair removers are definitely your friends for this region.

5. Chest

I’ve seen a few women with chest hair, and a lot of women also grow tiny hair on their nipples. I recall a friend of mine got quite worried about this. It’s not a big deal as we all have follicle on the nipples, so an occasional hair is bound to sprout. If you’re overly concerned, you can take it out using regular methods of hair removal such as tweezing and some salons offer nipple hair waxing. Sounds a teeny bit too much for me though.

6. Lady and Men Parts

I once got into a pretty heated conversation with a friend on whether or not it was right to take off all the hair in your lady parts, such that it’s as smooth as a baby’s cheek. I didn’t think so, and at that time, there was a lot of support from female celebrities on my view. I know people plop on a lot hair removers on there, but I get worried because when I read the labels of such hair removers, it advises it’s best used on bikini line and outer region. Using a natural wax is a preferred method, and if you can’t stand the pain, use a pair of scissors or bikini shaving sticks to work around the hair there. How do you get rid of hair here? Do men get a wax? I think it’s okay for them to use hair removers though, because, different physiology from the female folk.

7. Legs

Secondary (High) school was when I learnt about shaving your legs. I told a friend that that my mum said if I shaved, it’ll just grow back thicker and longer. Without a flinch, she responded “Then you shave it again!”. I didn’t, and I’ve got really hairy legs. It was mostly out of defiance though because some people made it seem like you just had to or perhaps you might never find a husband. I finally got a wax when I turned 24, because at that point, I wanted to and not as a result of pressure. Nevertheless, I think it’s good practice.

Ultimately, hair grows out of our bodies and it sure has it’s function. Let’s not get too caught up in an idea of perfect bodies – as there’s no such thing.

Did I miss anything? What’s your experience on body hair removal – all the way from your head to your toes (yeah, I’ve got hair on my toes as well)! Any lessons or tips to share with us? What works for you when it comes to shaving, and what doesn’t work? Favourites products? Share!

Love,

Kachee.. xX

You missed the most needed part to be shaved at least once a week. The armpits. I really do not understand why some people do not shave their pits like seriously, why? I’ve seen hair so dense it was no longer black on someone’s pits, im still scarred from that visual experience. Also, I think it’s important to have a clean shaved pubs or if you feel some type of way about being clean shaved, then by all means trim really low especially in naija with our hot hot hot weather. Please shave for your own good and for the good of the person going there and also for the sake of national peace. Thank you.

I don’t use hair removers either, I form a lather with my bathing soap on the area, makes it easier to shave with a shaving stick without bruises and bumps.

Hi, I can undestand underarm hair might really look ugly for some people and some woman also prefer men shaving theirs.
Btw instead which zone of the body would you leave to personal preference to shave or not even if you might prefer to shave everywhere which is also fine? 🙂

I completely agree… I also use the lather method for my pits during the week as well (every 3 days) as I am very hairy all over (face covered) except my head (smiles) and hair removals take a bit of my time while I’m trying to rush out to work…In this part of the world with the hot temp… we definitely need to keep it clean otherwise body odour which can be very disgusting.

Interesting post, Kachee!I shave my armpits, lady parts and shape my brows from time to time. I have never shaved my legs or whole body. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having hairs on my legs. Some people consider it a compulsory routine. Not me oo.And yes to coconut oil!PreciousCore.com

I use shaving sticks only. I tried shaving cream when I was in secondary school but I wasn’t sure of the chemicals inside so I stopped using it. Waxing terrifies me; I’m not sure I would be able to stand the pain. For my eyebrows, I’ve tried threading, waxing and used blade. Now, I just leave my eyebrows and I don’t use any makeup to define my eyebrows.

I switched to that for moisturizing (except for my face during the day where i use some serum) and washing with raw natural black soap, let me tell you, my skin has never been better! For shaving Kachee, Veet for the pits and limbs, shaving sticks for the inner/under lady parts (to be done with extreme caution, as you DO NOT WANT to get a cut there). I threaded my brows once, it was nice and neat but i don’t think i’ll be doing it again because i don’t really like ‘precision’ brows..I don’t fuss about facial hair on men, just be groomed and reasonable.SkyNotFancy

It leaves my skin feeling nice and smooth. For my brows, I used to thread them but now that I have some sort of shape I just shave them into shape. I can’t tweez to save my life. As for Brazillian wax hell not, I tried a home kit braz wax and it was a waste of money because that sh* is painful.www.stephylately.com

Hehehe, hairy post… I’ve always had body hair and always hated it, but sometimes I get lazy about my legs and just wear pants until I’m ready. I shave my legs, armpits and down there. I used to use hair removers for my legs and pits but not for years since I went organic. I tried a home wax kit once. I used to tweeze my brows but I stopped when I read that repeated plucking can make them thin out all over. So now I leave my brows alone mostly and use a blade only for special occasions. A little nip hair never hurt anybody. Lol. Once in a while I see one or two and leave them alone or tweeze if I’m really bored. One time I shaved my arms. I was about 11 or 12 and had too much time on my hands. I plan to get lasered some day. Too lazy for all this regular hair removal. Or I’ll just be a big girl and have a wax lady that notifies me when it’s time.

😁I’m glad.Good ol’ shaving stick does it for me now. I use Gillette mach 3 (meant for guys but I read reviews by women) and it makes all the difference- I’m talking smooooooth. I’m never going back to disposable razors. When it loses its edge, I replace the cartridge. I use my hair conditioner as a shave gel. Believe me, conditioner is bomb for this. As for laser, not scared in the least if it means never shaving again. I even want LASIK surgery so I can ditch my glasses.

I’m definitely buying the Gillette then. Last week I decided to try out one new Venus razor that said it has % blades. I thought it was 5 extra cartridges sort of. Only for me to get home and realise they meant 5 razors in one catridge. I was so pissed considering I bought it for £7! You’re the second person saying conditioner works! i’m so trying it out. Girl. I wish I could ditch my glasses, but I’m scared of surgery. Maybe after you try it! Lol.

Interesting Post.I started shaving my legs either during A-levels or uni and that’s because my cousin made me realise that it wasn’t cute to have hairy legs when wearing shorts or a skirt (that isn’t knee length)I threaded my eyebrows for the first time and it was only because my uni graduation was in a couple of days and my friend’s kept on saying it will make a difference. I cried when they were threading it and held my friend’s hand, haven’t gotten my eyebrows threaded since then.I usually get a make up artist to clean it up with a razor which isn’t as painful as threading. It only stings a tiny bit.Funny story, I had a shoot just before I left london last week and I really wanted to get my brows done before it however most places only offered thread or wax.I found one place in Westfield that could shape it with a razor but they said £15 and it just didn’t make sense for me to pay over 6k when in Nigeria, you can get it done for N200, N500, N1k, Max N2k.www.tukesquest.com

I am not one to shave off everything when it comes to the pubic region because I have been to hospitals and medical seminars when they advice to not shave it all off because these hairs do prevent some certain infections from entering the body.I made the mistake of shaving my legs once and till now,i wish I hadn’t done that.It grew back in a very irregular and annoying way and it’s something I have to battle with these days as I don’t shave it anymore. As for my underarm…I shave at least a week and even though I am not a fan of sleevless clothes,i still love the confidence that comes with neat underarms.Lovely post..Stylebyenkay.blogspot.com

Waxing is an effective way to remove unwanted hair. Waxing Salon Las Vegas treatments vary from full body wax, to arm, leg or bikini wax, to facial waxing or other small areas. Regardless of the area, preparing your skin for waxing is an important first step in the epilation process.

I think it’s enough to shave around underwear, the hair exposed on the top band when shaving the stomach and on the groin sides when doing the inner thigh, the rest is personal preference, well actually it is personal even to shave the legs or it should, but it’s just to drive the point :).
