It’s true what they say—social media is what you make of it! Ore’s current job landed in her lap because she had the courage (and was annoyed enough) to tweet! It’s exciting to be sharing this feature because Ore is a visible part of the KacheeTee community!

If you scan the comments section of the blog, you’re bound to see a number of comments from her. She has a genuine love for storytelling and creative content in all forms—from books and blogs to movies and music, and she’s privileged to utilise this passion at her day job!

We now get to know a bit more about her and her work life. Asides story telling and books, what would she do if she didn’t have to work? What’s the best part of her job? How can you get a job like this? She shares all of this—and also why Valentine’s Day 2019 has been her most memorable moment on the job so far (hmmm… what could it be?).

1. My alarm goes off…

first at 5:45am, then at 6:00am. Once I’m fully awake, I say a short prayer before preparing for work. Getting ready takes about 30 minutes for me, as I usually don’t wear makeup to work. By 6:45am or 6:50, I’m out of the house.

2. I get to work via…

my Mum’s car. She works in Surulere, Lagos and I work in Yaba, Lagos. Since I resumed at my current workplace, she’s been generous enough to drop me off at work before heading to hers (I can’t drive, but I am currently learning how to. Taxify is eating up my money!)

3. I  am responsible for…

The company’s internal and external communications. Our company is in the tech space and helps small and medium Nigerian businesses (that sell through Social Media channels like Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp) grow reliably through various products that help build trust between these businesses and their customers through courier services, escrow payment and ratings. As as a communications associate I am majorly responsible for growing and managing the company’s presence across all social media channels and collaborating with other departments (Customer Relations, Sales, Operations, etc.) to manage reputation, identify key players, and coordinate the company’s action plans.

4. I got the job …

by sharing my grievances on Twitter.

I have always loved communications and storytelling. After my NYSC in 2014, I decided to further my education by getting a master’s degree in journalism and media communication in Dublin, Ireland.

My previous work experiences focused heavily on Customer Relations. I’ve worked with Konga.com, IKEA Ireland, and Huawei Technologies. The experiences I have gathered over the years prepared me for my current role as I have learnt interesting things about customer relationship management and corporate communications.

After a couple of months at my last workplace, I craved more. I wanted to move slightly away from customer management to corporate communications full time and I randomly tweeted about it one fine morning.

A Twitter follower of mine—we’ve been online buddies for a while now—reached out to me about my current workplace and I was interested! I had a couple of conversations with the co-founders and I was offered the job last December.

5. My typical day at work

A typical day at work for me involves spending a lot of time on the internet researching, creating content, interacting with merchants (of course, I can’t escape this), writing reports and interacting with colleagues, as we are a small team. I basically have to be creative round the clock.

I report directly to one of the co-founders and we have weekly meetings on ways to improve the internal and external communications of the company. The energy level is always 100 and I love that.

6. My most memorable moment on the job so far has been…

Definitely has to be the week before Valentine’s Day 2019. My boss asked what our plans were for Valentine’s and I came up with an idea that was approved in under an hour. This is one of the many perks of constant researching and benchmarking.

7. The worst part of my job.

The not-so frequent dealings with irate merchants (this sometimes gets me in my feelings and I hate it).

8. The perks and the best part of my job…

is definitely the team! I have worked in toxic environments before and coming here has made me realise that not all workplaces in Nigeria are toxic.

Also, I love the fact that you always get some sort of credit for the things you do. Nobody tries to downplay your work or worries about you “stealing their shine’’— a breath of fresh air for me.

9. One misconception people have about my job is that…

It’s easy. I understand why people think so, but I am here to let you know that having your creative cap on every day of the week can be draining. Interacting with clients and merchants is also not an easy task.

10. If someone wanted a career like this, I’d advise them to…

Keep creating, networking, and researching. You have to be teachable and ready to teach. Also, create a LinkedIn account and keep shooting professional shots to companies you’re interested in. LinkedIn is an amazing platform and I will always stan it.

Most importantly, learn to be a better writer and keep creating valuable content by reading books and online materials from credible sources.

11. After work I…

go home or hang out with friends. There was a time in my life when all I did was work, work, work, and work. Ireland taught me that it is possible to balance your work and social life.

On days when I go home, I de-stress by taking a cold shower and watching movies on Netflix or reading a book (I love how I now pay enough attention to the storytelling in movies and books).

12. What I love the most about a 9 – 5…

Definitely the purposeful feeling of leaving my house and going to a workplace that needs me. This has made me disciplined in many ways with my time, finances (by saving and investing), and personal growth. I also love that I get paid at the end of the month for the work I do.

13. If I ever quit my job or if I never had to work, I’d go on to…

have an orphanage. I am tremendously passionate about children—especially orphans, who have no one to take care for them. I know that eventually, I will have my own home for orphans, but for now I’ll invest in our future with 9-5 and side hustles.

14. One career I’m genuinely curious about and might try in my second life.

Being a psychologist. I think it is amazing how the human mind works. Studying the normal and abnormal mental states and treating emotional and mental suffering in patients is something I have always had an interest in. Yeah, in my next life, I would be a psychologist.

I know I’m not the only one still wondering what Ore’s Valentine’s idea was! She admits she’s a lover of sappy romantic movies, so could it be from one of those?
